Marketing Jobs on the Rise in the Eastern Region

Recent statistics from marketing recruitment specialist Brand Recruitment reinforce the attitude that the economy may be in recovery. With house prices showing the slowest decline in almost 18 months and UK manufacturing output rising for the first time over the same period, pundits are suggesting that March ’09 was the ‘trough’ of the recession and data collated by Brand corresponds with this.

 Over the course of April and May ‘09, Brand were briefed on 49 PR and Marketing jobs across the Eastern region which was a drop from 61 during the corresponding months of ’08, yet an increase on the average monthly figures for January, February and March ‘09. Conversely the percentage of candidates registering who were being made redundant has decreased significantly from a peak of 34% in November and December ’08 to 26% over April and May ’09 – although over the same months last year the figure was less than half this. The company recruits across the Eastern region with the majority of their jobs being based in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Essex.  Ursula Colman, Managing Consultant at Brand claims that the ‘feel’ of the market is encouraging, yet remains cautious. The phenomenon of a ‘dead cat bounce’ has been widely mooted and there are still indicators that signify tough times in the corporate world. She relayed the view that marketing departments are often the first to undergo cuts in headcount during slowdowns, so in that model the increase in the number of available PR and Marketing jobs in the Eastern Region could indicate a recovery. However, she added that many companies have adapted the way they market, rather than cutting their marketing output, “Many companies have moved resources into targeted, tangible marketing programmes such as online or email marketing and direct marketing and we have seen far fewer jobs in less ‘accountable’ areas such as events.”
